Palliser Estate Pinot Noir 2006

Medium-deep red with a touch of brick. Lovely ripe nose, dark cherry, cedar and chocolate. Ripe, full wine with great pinot character and oak and acid in balance, and secondary earth/forest notes there. Long complex finish. Wonderful! Martinborough, New Zealand 19/20 [tasted 13-01-2012] http://www.palliser.co.nz

Schubert Block B Pinot Noir 2008

Medium deep red robe, still fresh and bright. Meaty notes and dark cherries and red fruits/plum; a bright floral sweetness there too. Elegant, feminine (as in classy) wine that’s in balance; clean, fruits reflect those on the nose (cherries, plums) along with floral notes and a delicious sweet earthy/mushroom tones. Long fine finish with fruit, and … Continue reading

Dry River Gewürztraminer 2006

Lovely golden colour. Rich, deep, sweet nose with rose petal florals and Turkish delight with a little sweet vanilla. Wonderful rich, raisiny, thick palate with ripe peaches and rose/Turkish delight but all in balance. Long, long finish. This is a delicious aged Gewürztraminer. Martinborough, New Zealand. 19/20 [tasted 05-11-2011]

Tirohana Grand Master Platinum Pinot Noir 2005

Medium deep bright red right to the edge. Chocolatey nose, quite elegant and complex; some sweet cherry and a touch of plum. Palate a touch thin after the nose; good character and pinot fruit with some lovely florals; smooth tannins. Lovely moreish finish. Not a big wine but very elegant and full of flavour. Schubert Sauvignon Blanc 2007

Yes – a 2007 and still very much alive. A small percentage spent five months on old oak (according to the website), and it makes this wine. It’s developed but towards stone and tropical fruits, not the typical Sauv blanc canned peas. Good finish with acid and fruit in balance (perhaps a touch of helpful … Continue reading

Margrain Chenin Blanc 2006

Touch of sweet straw, grass, and citrus and stone fruits on the nose; mirrored on the palate, with lovely lemon and lime. A hint of sugar and then clean acid cutting through. Fruit stays on the finish. Maturing nicely. Easily another two to three years. Martinborough, New Zealand 18/20 [tasted 14-08-2010]

Palliser Martinborough Riesling 2007

Delicious and just coming into its own. Good citrus characters and acid backbone in balance with a gentle sprinkling of ripe fruit sugars. A hint of mineral/kerosene in there too. Just 12% alcohol, and a few more years ahead of it yet. Martinborough, New Zealand 17/20 [tasted 04-08-2010]

Schubert Cabernet/Merlot 2006

Delicious blackcurrant and perfume nose – almost like there’s a touch of Cab Franc in there. Palate matches nose – delicate, black fruits, plum, and vanilla and chocolate notes. Taninn and acid are balanced. Alcohol heat there just a little too much (14.5% – my guess was 15). Great wine – not a fruit bomb. Glad I have … Continue reading
