Ch d’Agassac 2000

Deep garnet with a touch of amber on the edge. Cedary chocolate with a hint of forest floor and smoke on the nose. Quite a big wine but a touch hot and tannic is the initial palate impression; nice secondary cedar and forest development and good ripe plummy fruit with cassis notes. Good long finish. … Continue reading

Ch d’Agassac 2000

Ch d’Agassac 2000. Mid-deep red almost to the edge. Forest floor and fresh earth with some lanolin too. Big wine but in balance, with gentle acid and smooth tannins, but the fruit has faded. A touch green on the finish and lacking fruit. Score reflects what it is rather than what it was. Haut-Medoc, Bordeaux, … Continue reading

Ch Segur de Cabanac 2000

Mid-deep red with just a hint of brown. Touch of lanolin with lovely forest mushrooms, sweet blackcurrants and blackberries. Mild palate of ripe fruit and silky tannins. Black fruits and berries linger on the finish. Very good red. Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux, France 17.5/20 [tasted 26-12-2011]

Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Champagne 2000

Touch of SO2 but that blows off. Bready/toasty lees, stone fruits and pretty florals. Rich and round palate although an initial sharpness (possibly the sulphur). Good long finish with yeast and stone fruits lingering. Very good wine once it cleans up in the glass, and better than last year’s Christmas bottle. Épernay, Champagne, France 18.5/20 … Continue reading

Elderton Barossa CSM 2000

Dark plum robe. Blackcurrants, plum, blackberries with some earthiness and a smidgeon of pepper; very complex. Mellow fruit but big; quite sweet and some menthol and smoke with plums and blackcurrants. Good finish of fruit and spice. Lovely big and bold wine. Barossa, South Australia, Australia 19/20 [tasted 30-06-2010]

Elderton Barossa CSM 2000

Bright clear red, no age showing. brambles on the front, then pepper and black berries/fruit and plum – but way too hot. Heat on the palate, the lovely savoury berries; it actually works – plums, blackcurrants, crisp apple and gooseberry (weird but true). Finish is short but balanced. Dusty, mellow, fruity, nice. It’s a good … Continue reading

Ch Segur de Cabanac 2000

Deep colour with just a hint of brown. Smoky nose, quite perfumed with violets obvious. Balanced, very good clean fruit, plums and blackcurrants and some lovely smoky mushroom in the background. Florals on the finish, quite long. Lovely delicious wine. Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux, France 18/20 [tasted 18-09-2011]

Matariki Reserve Syrah 2000

Medium-deep robe, good colour – no sign of age, although this shows on the nose. Touch of lanolin, and mix of black and white pepper. Fruit a bit behind the acid now. Elegant in its own way – red fruits there. Lovely Rhone-type finish. Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand 17/20 [tasted 18-06-2011]

Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Champagne 2000

Hint of toasty yeast, stone fruits and pinot character. A touch of sweetness on the palate but acid almost balances; stone fruits (white peach and apricot) and white florals. Long clean finish. Good for M&C – drinking now and will mellow further. For me, lacks elegance and delicacy. Épernay, Champagne, France 17/20 [tasted 25-12-2010]

Much better than the last bottle just a few days ago. Barossa, South … Continue reading
