Ch Chasse-Spleen 2002

Medium red young robe. Lovely smoky, cigar box scents with blackcurrants and plums and a lanolin back note. Grippy tannins; good fruit; elegant with a nice mineral backbone. Good length. Classic Bordeaux but too tannic on the finish. Interesting that this bottle had more elegance than the one opened seven weeks before; tannins the same … Continue reading

Champagne Aubry Classique Brut N/V

Light gold with good fine bead. Nice clean nose with some yeast lees, green apple and a touch of stone fruit. Palate clean and bright with good acid and light yeasty character. Good length. An elegant rather than full champagne. 50% Pinot Meunier, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. Reims, Champagne, France 18/20 [tasted 18-11-2011]

Dry River Gewürztraminer 2006

Lovely golden colour. Rich, deep, sweet nose with rose petal florals and Turkish delight with a little sweet vanilla. Wonderful rich, raisiny, thick palate with ripe peaches and rose/Turkish delight but all in balance. Long, long finish. This is a delicious aged Gewürztraminer. Martinborough, New Zealand. 19/20 [tasted 05-11-2011]

Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay 1997

Golden sherry colour. Initially strong oxidation and clearly past it. Palate is still alive but the oxidised fruit dominates; opens in the glass and is clearly still old but has lovely sweet fruit and some toasty malo. Long finish of caramel and stone fruits. Moutere, Nelson, New Zealand 17/20 (considering its age) but 14/20 really … Continue reading

Martinborough, … Continue reading

Brookfields Hillside Syrah 2001

Good robe with mid-deep colour and surprisingly fresh looking. Rhone nose with plummy fruit and both black and white pepper and a hint of vanilla. Mellow, aged fruit on the palate. Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir 2006

Good medium red with just a hint of amber on the edge. Bright dark cherry fruit but obvious alcohol heat. Palate full, rich and balanced – better than the nose promised; good meaty and toasty notes; cherries and black fruits. Full long finish but the heat comes through again at the end. Waipara, New Zealand … Continue reading

Ch Chasse-Spleen 2002

Very dark plum red. Big plums and blackcurrants. Tannin obvious; dark berries, especially blackcurrants; quite big and tannic still but opens in the glass. Finish quite tannic but some fruit sweetness in balance as well. May need more bottle age. Moulis, Bordeaux, France 17/20 [tasted 01-10-2011]

Elderton Barossa CSM 2000

Barossa, South Australia, Australia 19/20 [tasted 30-06-2010]
